Everyday Acts of Solidarity: 5 Ways You're Already Making a Difference
By: Te’Jal Cartwright
When we think of booming communities that thrived in solidarity, we may think of communities from the past like Greenwood Village or communities that are far away like the Mondragon Corporation which holds over 70,000 members in the Basque region of Spain. It’s always easy to romanticize about other spaces and how they were able to succeed but I think it's important for us to understand that we are living in solidarity right now in our own home. Every person I know shows up for their community in some way.
It’s important to take note of how solidarity already exists in our own backyard. Here are 5 ways that you are already practicing solidarity in your community.
Supporting local businesses
Shopping local is a way to stand together and support your neighbors. When you shop local, you are investing in your neighbors and investing in their livelihood. You’re keeping the dollar in your community which will increase the chances of you seeing a return on your investment.
Volunteering
Giving your free time to local entities is a great way to live in solidarity. This is a simple way to show up especially when you give your time to organizations or groups that may be limited on resources. Your time and effort shows solidarity in ways that money can’t always buy.
Educating yourself and standing up for others
Stepping outside of your personal bubble and being aware of other people's experience is a great example of how you’re living in solidarity already. Protests against injustices, , and more demonstrates how we are united we are.
Tending to Community gardens
Tending to community gardens is another great way we engage in solidarity. These green spaces not only beautify our neighborhoods but also foster a sense of shared responsibility and connection. By lending a hand in planting, watering, and harvesting, we contribute to the well-being of all who share in the harvest, regardless of who planted the seeds.
Helping your “neighbor”
Helping your “neighbor” extends beyond literal neighbors to include anyone in our social circles. It's those everyday acts of kindness and support that embody solidarity. Whether it's offering a ride to a friend in need, watching someone's kids so they can have a break, or simply sharing a meal together, these gestures strengthen the fabric of our communities.
Solidarity isn't just a concept; it's a lived experience, that’s already woven into the fabric of our daily lives. As we recognize and celebrate these everyday acts of solidarity, we realize that the power to create thriving communities lies within each of us, waiting to be unleashed through simple yet impactful acts of compassion and support.
